On September 9, 2005, the U.S. firm Whirlpool celebrated the formal opening of a new plant at their Wroclaw facility (the Polar plant) producing stoves and ovens. The U.S. Consul General in Krakow, Kenneth Fairfax joined Whirlpool's Vice President for European Operation, Michael Todman, plant manager Egidio Calvi, and many other guests for the opening ceremony. This latest investment by Whirlpool in Poland will create 1,000 additional jobs, bringing the total workforce to over 3,000.

In his remarks during the opening ceremonies, Consul General Fairfax spoke of Whirlpool's growing commitment to Poland and Wroclaw as part of a long history of strong American-Polish relations and cooperation. He also noted that while Whirlpool is an American company, building the new plant in Wroclaw involved participation by Poles, Italians, Swedes, Germans, Americans and others and is thus a genuinely international cooperative effort. "It is fitting," he stated, "that precisely here in Wroclaw - a city that has known so much of the cruelty and destruction of war during its long history - that today people from all over Europe and America are coming together to cooperate on building a better, peaceful future for us all."
