International Conference on Tolerance

On September 22-24 an international conference entitled tolerancja.pl brought together in Krakow representatives of the Polish and American governments, non-governmental organizations and academia. Eminent guests included the U.S. Ambassador to Poland Christopher R. Hill, Malopolska provincial governor, Jerzy Adamik, prof. Leon Kieres president of the National Rememberance Institute, representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles and the Southern Poverty Law Center among others. The U.S Embassy-sponsored conference assembled participants also from Great Britain, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.

The conference was accompanied by a photographic exhibition on refugee camps in Sudan and a dance show by the American Battery Dance Company. Organizers of the conference agreed to establish an annual Sergio Vieira de Mello award for promoting tolerance and combating xenophobia. The conference was organized by the Decius Villa Association, Znak Christian Culture Foundation and the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow.

The three-day conference received national and local media coverage.

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
