On February 5th the exhibition "Masters of Light: California Impressionism" was opened in Krakow's International Cultural Centre (Rynek Glowny 25). The exhibition presents 58 oil paintings of American impressionist art from the late 19th and early 20th century. The paintings come from the Irvine Museum, Irvine, Ca. as well as several private collections.

The exhibition was opened by ICC's Director, Jacek Purchla. The Irvine Museum Director, Jean Stern, as well as its Vice-President, James Irvine Swinden took part in the vernissage. Representatives of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Poland included Deputy Chief of Mission Cameron Munter, Consul General Siria Lopez, Public Affairs Officer Leslie High and Cultural Affairs Officer Peter Sawchyn.

These artworks are among the best examples of the California school of plein-air painting. Most of the artists studied impressionist technique in Europe, then applied this technique to uniquely American subjects, the landscapes and seascapes of southern California.

The exhibition will be at the ICC until May 4th. Krakow is the only Polish city to host the exhibition, which will be then be shown in Madrid, Spain.
