On April 25, 2006 Ambassador Victor Ashe took part in the 15th March of the Living. Along with more than 8000 youth from around the world, he marched from the Auschwitz gate to the Birkenau camp. Also in attendance were numerous survivors from Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps; former Israeli Prime Minister and 1994 Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres; Deputy Speaker of Polish Parliament Bronislaw Komorowski; and other members of the diplomatic corps in Poland. After the March, a ceremony commemorated the victims. Torches were lit to pay tribute to survivors, to honor the righteous among the nations, and to remember the victims of Auschwitz and all other concentration camps. The young people participating in the March of the Living paid tribute to the innocent victims of the holocaust and vowed to "never forget".
