Consul General Anne Hall recently visited the home of Witold Zieliński in the Śląskie Region to deliver $1900 that was reinstated to Mr. Zieliński by the United States Department of Treasury. In 2005, Mr. Zieliński received $2000 from a relative in the United States for medical treatment. Mr. Zieliński kept the money in his oven but unfortunately, a neighbor, wanting to help the family, was preparing some food and accidentally burned the money. Mr. Zieliński sent a jar containing the burned remnants of the U.S. currency to the head of the Public Affairs Section at the US Embassy in Warsaw, Edward Kulakowski. Mr. Kulakowski, after conducting a little research, discovered that the United States Department of Treasury can reissue currency if they can determine that more than 50% of the original currency still remains. Mr. Kulakowski sent the jar of ashes and burned currency to the United States, and one year later, he received a check for $1900, which was the amount that Department of Treasury determined remained from the original $2000. Mr. Zieliński and his wife were very grateful for the US Embassy’s assistance in regaining their money.
