Former First Lady Jolanta Kwaśniewska and Consul for Political and Economic Affairs Duncan Walker participated in a ceremony at the Naklo School in Upper Silesia to honor a Polish-American, Kaya Mirecka-Ploss, in a ceremony renaming the school the Kaya Mirecka-Ploss School on September 13. Kaya Mirecka-Ploss is a Silesian-born Pole who has lived in the United States for over 40 years. She has been active in popularizing Polish culture in the US through radio programs and cultural centers. Through her work with the Jan Karski Institute in the United States, which she founded in 2000, Ms. Mirecka-Ploss has sponsored two-week “Dream Holidays” for Polish children in the United States. She has been cooperating with the former first lady Jolanta Kwaśniewska in carrying out this project, and approximately 180 children have benefited from this program. The day before the ceremony, Ms. Mirecka-Ploss established a foundation which will support the activities of the school of which she is now patron. |
