V.P. Cheney congratulated Yushchenko on his victory in the elections for president of the "proud and sovereign Ukrainian people." The Vice President said that Yushchenko faces a difficult job in strengthening democracy in Ukraine.

Yushchenko gave assurances that the United States - like Russia, Poland and other countries - is a strategic partner of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president invited Dick Cheney to Ukraine at his earliest convenience.

The bilateral talks lasted more than an hour. During the meeting, both diplomats raised economic and political issues.
