On February 5th an Internet chat with the American Deputy Chief of Mission Cameron Munter took place in the American Information Resource Center at the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow. The chat inaugurated a series of programs entitled Bridges to the East, organized by the Consulate, ZNAK Christian Culture Foundation, Villa Decius Association and Internet portal Onet.pl. The chat focused on the relations between Poland, Ukraine and Europe.
Excerpts: agnata: Is there still a big rift between Poles and Ukrainians? Are there national prejudices against one another? Cameron Munter: If Poles and Ukrainians think about the past, such prejudices will exist. However, if they focus on the future, everything will be all right.
passeig_de_gracia: How can you evaluate Polish governments' policy towards the East after 1989? What do you perceive as a success and can you see any weaknesses? Cameron Munter: When Polish leaders focus on problems of the past, they cannot succeed. We should believe that current Polish authorities want Ukraine to develop favorably. In fact, Polish authorities keep reminding American ones about their activities aimed at strengthening the development of democracy in Ukraine. Ukraine should continue its efforts aimed at political, economic and social reforms in order to take its rightful place in Europe. Poland does everything it can for this to happen...
