The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow organized a film presentation and teleconference focusing on the issues of tolerance and understanding and Polish-American Jewish relations on November 22, 2005.

The afternoon's event consisted of a screening of the film "Hiding and Seeking: Faith and Tolerance After the Holocaust" and was followed by a teleconference with its director Menachem Daum.

In the film, Daum, an Orthodox Jew, tries to alert his adult sons to the dangers of creating impenetrable barriers between themselves and those outside their faith. He takes them on an emotional journey to Poland to track down the family who risked their lives to hide their grandfather for more than two years during World War II. In this way the film, asks if it is possible to heal wounds and bitterness passed down through generations.

The audience of around 50 consisted of students from the Judaic Studies department at the Jagiellonian University and a local high-school, their teacher and professors and local activists on Polish-Jewish issues. Through his film and the following Q&A session, Daum provided a powerful, moving and eloquent appeal for tolerance and mutual understanding, pointing out that in their centuries of shared history and values, Poles and Jews have much in common.
