A delegation from the US Conference of Mayors (USCM) visited Krakow and Oswiecim, March 21-23. Led by current Conference of Mayors President Beverly O’Neill of Long Beach, California, the group included Mayor Patrick McCrory of Charlotte, North Carolina; Mayor Bill Purcell of Nashville, Tennessee; Mayor Joseph P. Historical and cultural sites were the group’s focus. Their tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps in Oswiecim was an eye opening experience. After learning about the story of the camps, they paid their respects to Holocaust victims by laying a wreath at the Death Wall in Auschwitz.
They also spent time learning about the history , architecture, and city planning of Krakow before returning to Warsaw for meetings with US Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe, and Polish President Lech Kaczynski.
