On April 20-22, 2005, the English Department of the Jagiellonian University held its triennial international conference: Language and Identity: English and American Studies in the Age of Globalization.

The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow helped bring two American scholars to Krakow to participate: Prof. David Cowart, University of South Carolina who gave the opening address - Trailing Clouds: Recent Immigrant Writing in the United States and Prof. Juliana Flinn of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock who, along with her Belarussian counterpart, presented a joint paper - Cultural Aspects of American and Belarussian Concepts of Home.

The conference was very well attended and allowed academics from the U.S. as well as Poland and other countries in Europe to exchange views and share scholarship on the latest topics in the study of American literature.
