At a ceremony on July 21, Consul General Anne Hall together with the Mayor of Wroclaw, Rafal Dutkiewicz, and Colonel Ray Wojcik from the Office of Military Cooperation at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, unveiled a relief of Ronald Reagan in the underground passage of Wroclaw's Grunwaldzki Square. The relief is the work of Wroclaw artists Eugeniusz Get-Stankiewicz and Barbara Idzikowska, and presents the smiling face of Ronald Reagan who during his presidency fought tirelessly to tear the Iron Curtain down and bring freedom, democracy, and a free market economy to Poland and the other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The inscription over the plaque reminds passers-by of his role in this process. It also holds the President’s famous signature that was gilded during the ceremony by the Consul General and the Mayor of Wroclaw.
Colonel Wojcik brought a letter to the ceremony from former First Lady Nancy Reagan in which she expressed her gratitude to the Mayor and the city of Wroclaw for honoring her husband. During the dedication ceremony, Consul General Anne Hall read the letter to those gathered at the underground site and Mayor Dutkiewicz highlighted the uniqueness of the Polish-American bond.
