U.S. Congressional Delegation and Embassy Honor Fallen in Lubin

31 August 2007

On Friday, August 31, U.S. Representative Albio Sires (D-NJ), along with Representatives Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart and U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe flew with President Lech Kaczynski to Lubin in southwestern Poland to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the founding of Solidarity.  While there, they attended a mass in honor of those who participated in the 1982 protest marches against the then communist government, and laid a wreath at the foot of the statue dedicated to the five people killed during the event.  The delegation was accompanied by a group of ten Cuban-Americans currently in Poland to draw attention to the human rights situation in Cuba, and to encourage Poles to continue their support of efforts to promote a democratic transition in Cuba.
