The Know America contest tests participants on all aspects of American culture, including history, geography, art, and pop culture, as well as social, ethnic, and religious issues. In 2007, 1103 high school students registered and answered the questions in the first round.
The competition consists of two rounds – the first round an exam of 80 multiple choice questions and the second round an essay. The organizers also have called a third round, an oral component that will test the fifteen finalists for American knowledge and English fluency.
The Know America Contest is run by the Rural Development Foundation, first registered in 1987 as the Water Supply Foundation with a $10 million grant from the U.S. Congress. Initially, the Foundation organized trainings for rural inhabitants on running small scale enterprises and agro-tourism, and on environmental protection and the basics of local democracy and developing citizen awareness. Currently, the Foundation supports the economic, social, cultural, and technical infrastructure initiatives of villages and small towns.
Join the contest! Registration closes on November 13.
