Philip Bialowitz, one of the eight living survivors of the Sobibór concentration camp, visited Warsaw, Lublin, Wroclaw and Krakow from October 3-26, 2008. Mr. Bialowitz was in Poland to talk about his book "Revolt at Sobibór: A Teenager’s Story of Survival in Nazi-Occupied Poland" (published October 2008), which he wrote with great support from his son Joe. In their public meetings, Mr. Bialowitz and his son Joe focused on the message of the book that at Sobibór the prisoners not only fought for their lives, but most of all for a world without racism and genocide. The book also presents a moving account of how several heroic Polish Catholics saved his life by hiding him and caring for him after his escape from Sobibór. The book was accompanied by the letter of Ambassador Victor Ashe, who said:
"We owe a debt of gratitude to survivors and rescuers like Philip Bialowitz, Elie Wiesel, and Wladyslaw Bartoszewski for sharing their stories with the world. They serve as a caution for why we must never forget the significance of the pledge "never again." They also show that the individual can make a difference even against apparently insurmountable odds, which keeps hope alive for all of us."
