Former CEO of Discovery Communications Judith McHale was in Krakow on Friday September 7 to speak with new business owners at conference entitled “New Firms, New Practices” at MISTIA (Malopolska Institute for the Development of Local Government and Administration). Ms. McHale gave advice to new business owners on the essential ingredients needed to start and maintain a successful business, using examples from her own career at Discovery Channel. Conference participants found the story of Discovery’s origin from a simple idea to a multi-billion dollar company very inspiring. Ms. McHale also talked about the importance of creating a family-friendly workplace through the use of flexible work hours and child-care assistance and stressed that businesses should also give back to the community through education and volunteer programs.
