Former New York City Fire Chief and 9/11 hero Dan Daly met with students at the Szkoła Aspirantów Państwowej Straży Pożarnej in Krakow on May 6 to share his recollections of 9/11. Daly was in Krakow to help support the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans. Five Freedom Team members participated in the Krakow marathon on May 4. Chief Daly spoke to the young firefighters about the events of September 11 and its aftermath. Through a moving slide show, he described the unimaginably difficult six-month rescue and recovery effort conducted at Ground Zero. Chief Daly reminded the firefighters about the need for proper safety and communication equipment. He stressed the importance of good training and communication between the police, firefighters and emergency rescue workers, citing the experience of 9/11. Chief Daly also talked about the positive role firefighters play in the community. He encouraged the firefighters to join volunteer efforts for the disabled, explaining how New York firefighters assist disabled athletes every year in the New York City marathon.
